Computer Weekly is reporting that Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said that due to the strong demand for the Macbook Pro, they may not have enough units to ship on the date advised (Feb 15). I assume they will send orders based on FIFO principles. I placed my order a few days after the announcement so I may be out of luck!

Has anyone used iEmulator? I saw the advertisement for it on google, but I am uncertain whether it is worthwhile software. Has anyone had any experience? Is this just some other emulator packaged and renamed?

Macworld runs the iMac through the gauntlet. Their findings? It is not quite as fast as promised. Lets point out a few things though. The iMac switched from the G5 (a desktop processor) to the Intel Core Duo ( a laptop processor ). It is now going to run cooler, quieter and can be a smaller form factor. The fact that this switch has ANY improvment is testament to the quality of these new processors. I cant wait for the Macbook to arrive (Shipping date still says Feb 15)

Business Week takes a look at the breakdown of costs to produce a new Intel based iMac. They dont really mention that Apple's strategy is to keep prices the same while lowering the costs to produce. So looking at the margin now may not reflect how much Apple will make on average on that product. Surely, they will try to reduce the production cost as they come out with new Machines.

Wine being ported to the Intel Mac

For those of you unfamiliar with Wine, it is a piece of software that has been under development for many years on linux and it seeks to run windows applications natively within X-windows. It allows you to run Office XP (not sure about 2003) but does not work with applications like Access. It is essentially a half-implementation of windows within unix / linux based systems. I wouldnt recommend it if you need things to work as they do in Windows. The intel processor is supposed to have virtualization technology built in which eliminates the real need for software like Darwine (Wine). I still applaud their progress however.

Is 4% Market share really a success? Ryan Hornbeck doesnt think so. Well, it comes into a little more context when you see that it is the number 6 computer maker. Sixth place is nothing to snicker at. Dell on the other hand has 26 percent worldwide... but if you look at the typical car comparison done with apple... where apple is BMW and Dell is Toyota; You dont expect BMW to be the number one selling car brand in America. I dont think BMW is even number 6! So the fact that apple is able to pull it off, good for them! I think it is a success. It still is a far cry from where they used to be, but the computer market has changed in 20 years.

Greg Keizer at Techweb news makes a good point that being able to run windows on mac will mean more money in Microsoft's pocket. Keizer speculates that Microsoft loves the idea of you running windows on one of their competitors hardware. Essentially, Apple only competes on the OS side at this stage. The base system when you buy a computer is however containing more and more software - music player, video editor, picture manager. I wonder if they will ever role an office suite (not StarOffice) into the base operating system (not the bundle from the manufacturer)

C-Net has a Q&A session with themselves about whether the Intel Mac will run Windows and what the hurdles are to overcome. It seems like there are a lot of people still talking about it and saying yes it can, or no it cant, but not enough people with the new iMac duo core trying to figure it out! Less than 30 days till my MacBook gets here... will I be able to load windows on when it arrives?

Partially booting Vista

Someone managed to get the EFI interface to recognize Windows Vista from a USB thumb drive. Screen images are a little further down the list. This is an excellent step towards getting the full instructions on how to do it. I wonder how long it will be before someone boots the Vista DVD direct. It seems like there may be a way to boot the Windows XP cd if someone hacks the installation CD to put the CSM actually on the CD. Is this possible?

According to the recent Ars Technica review, it appears that the iMac will not boot Windows XP from the cd as is. It seems that it will take some hackers a little more time to figure out how to get Bill Gates software onto the mac.

I figured out a way to get in to the EFI menu on the new Intel iMac. I was attempting to install Vista, which did not work. As I discovered from poking around in the EFI there is no support for UDF or El Torito volumes. It seems only GPT and APM is supported. Writing a driver for EFI to support UDF should be easy enough for someone who knows how, one might even exist already. I'm going to give step-by-step instructions for getting in to the EFI so that some enterprising people will get to work on installing Windows.
